Korean Ich'ung Jang Elm & Weave Cabinet
Korean Ich'ung Jang Elm & Weave Cabinet
This is an Ich'ung Jang ( two compartment) cabinet from I believe the Gyeonggi province in South Korea. Interestingly, each cabinet of this type, looks different depending on where it is from in Korea.
These cabinets would have originally been used for clothing storage. A cabinet like this would have belonged to a more wealthy person. But as the country developed and people were able to spend more money, these chests became more popular. This one, having woven decoration to the front panels, is more unusual and they are commonly fronted in Elm.
They were lifted off the ground, elevating it above the heated floor, known as “ondol”.
Late 20th Century in date and in very good condition.
It measures 68cm wide by 84cm high by 32cm deep.
